Time Magazine published an article back in May of 2014.  The Caption read, “HOW GENEALOGY BECAME ALMOST AS POPULAR AS PORN.”  Here’s what it said, “genealogy is the second most popular hobby in the U.S. after gardening, according to ABC News, and the second most visited category of websites, after pornography. It’s a billion-dollar industry that has spawned profitable websites, television shows, scores of books and — with the advent of over-the-counter genetic test kits — a cottage industry in DNA ancestry testing.

Maybe you are one of those people who has found much joy as you have learned about your ancestors.  It’s amazing who we are related to, what amazing things they did, and some of the surprising contributions they made.  One of the major ancestors that’s part of my own roots is Victor Hugo, writer of “Les Miserables” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

But, have you ever thought about your (our) spiritual roots?  Have you ever considered the Jewish Roots of our Christianity?  They are nothing short of amazing.  Unfortunately most people have no idea about them.  This is what Christianity was birthed out of.  We know it as Judaism.  It’s the religion of the Jews.  It was the practice of our own Messiah.  The simplest description is that the Jews, including Jesus, were Torah observant.  They followed the admonitions of the Torah – the first 5 Books of the Bible.  According to the Jewish calendar, the Jews just finished up the Fall Feasts and Festivals.

The final holy day is called, Simchot Torah, meaning “rejoicing in the Torah.”  It’s the time when the year long reading through the first five books of the Bible concludes, and the reading cycle of Genesis begins again.  On that day, they take the great Torah Scrolls from the cabinets of the synagogues.  The scroll (The Word of God) is robed in royal blue, it is crowned as though it were a king, it is held close, hugged, kissed, danced with, and read.  There is great rejoicing.

I’m reminded of John’s words in his Gospel.  “In the beginning was the Word.  The Word was with God, and the Word was God…The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”  Jn. 1

So, you can imagine the picture of The Word – Jesus – robed, crowned, hugged, kissed, danced with and rejoiced over.  This is a glimpse of our Jewish roots. If you haven’t realized it yet, Jesus is all over the Old Testament.  What an outstanding picture.  And, the Hebrew Scriptures are full of them.

I can’t wait to show you some amazing and mind blowing things as we begin a NEW SERIES, a week from this Sunday.  It’s a series about David’s Mighty Men – the other Band of Brothers!  Get ready for an amazing look at this season in the life of a guy that we’ve all come to love.  And, don’t forget, we were birthed out of all of this.  Isn’t God good!
