FEBRUARY MISSIONS UPDATE

Martin Flaherty   -

Ever seen the movie Groundhog Day? It’s a good one; and a most unique romantic comedy.  This year that movie reminded me of missions.  To catch you up in my brain, the movie is about a man (ironically named Phil) trapped in the town of Punxsutawney, PA living the same day over and over again for years!  He goes crazy, he goes criminal, he goes hopeless, he goes greedy, he goes obsessive and nothing changes until the day he goes selfless.

Phil begins to serve.  He starts to see the needs people around him have. And as he begins to help them he learns that age ol’ biblical truth: it is more blessed to give than to receive; and that the best way to spend his life even if it’s just one day is through blessing others.  He starts to serve in small ways and big ways.  He serves kids and the elderly. He encourages a young couple and saves a man’s life. He blesses everyone he comes into contact with that day until he has a changed heart and lives the perfect day, one that he’s excited to live again the next day.  And that’s why Groundhogs day reminds me of missions, and I’m excited about it!  I’m excited because I really like that movie and I really like missions! There is excitement and mystique around missions! Maybe you don’t even know all of what I’m about to share with you. But missions is a true value in the heart of Deer Flat Church.  And I know this to be true because:

  • Deer Flat Church tithes 10% of her offerings to missions.
  • Deer Flat Church is sending 90 people to Mexico this August.
  • Deer Flat Church is planning a mission trip to Salem, Oregon in April.
  • Deer Flat Church added three new missionaries to be supported in 2022.
  • Deer Flat Church is offering a 6-week class on the book of Acts with Pastor Isrrael.
  • Deer Flat Church has a reputation of generosity among mission organizations in the Treasure Valley.
  • Deer Flat Church prays, encourages, gives, and celebrates kingdom growth beyond her walls in our community and around the world.

Thank you Deer Flat Church for truly placing a value on missions.  I’m thankful for each one of you who displays this value through your giving and your going and your praying. And I imagine our Heavenly Father is pretty pleased with it too.
